All of us at Top Tier recently had fun with a little video highlighting our expansive breadth of services we can offer - it might have been overkill for a garbage disposal fix - but we always want to have the right tool for the job to get you back up and running in the most efficient way possible! Whether that be in the tools that our plumbers physically use, or the training and knowledge base our plumbers have acquired with their experience. Check out our video!
Reedsburg, WI and the surrounding areas have recently experienced 100 year flood stages for the second time in the last 10 years. One of the unfortunate possibilities with flooding is not just flood water entering your home, but sewage backing up into your home as a result of City sewer mains becoming full.
The picture to the right was taken in a home that was the lowest elevation on the block and did not have a backwater valve which allowed the City sewage to back up into the home. If you look close enough you can see on the wall behind the plumber the level had actually been up to just below the electrical outlet. A complete and utter mess for this homeowner.
What can be done to help prevent this? Make sure if you are on a City sewer system that your home has a backwater valve installed on the main sewer lateral. A backwater valve prevents the City sewer from backing up into your home.
The downside is that while the backwater valve is shut, you will be unable to use the plumbing system within your home (nothing down the drain - no toilets flushed, showers, hands washed etc) otherwise your drain waste will back up into your home. The flipside is it is a temporary inconvenience which will save you thousands of dollars in clean-up - think replacement of your furnace, water heater, appliances etc. and keep all of your neighbors sewage out of your house.
See below the illustration for exactly how the backwater valve works.
The vast majority of folks don't spend a lot of time thinking about P-traps. That's not the case here at Top Tier, we find ourselves lately spending a lot of time thinking about P-traps.
New design trends are increasingly showing open concept vanities - which are beautiful - but bring with them a sometimes an overlooked necessity - the P-trap. The drain on your sink when inside a cabinet is typically a white PVC P-trap. When using an exposed vanity though - we highly recommend matching your P-trap to your faucet finishes. It's kind of like coordinating your bag to your shoes ladies!
It just gives the bathroom a tied-together, cohesive look. Check out the pictures below to get an idea the difference a coordinating P-trap can bring to your space.

Tim Curtin is certainly not new to the plumbing industry, he is an established journeyman plumber with almost 20 years of experience in the Reedsburg area, but he is Top Tier's newest plumber.
Top Tier was lucky enough to hire Tim in March 2017 and he was brave enough to jump on the crazy train that is Top Tier! And oh what a ride it's been! We're so happy to have Tim as part of our team. He jumped right into the role of our primary service plumber.
Why is Tim so fabulous at what he does managing multiple calls and customers every day? We think it's got something to do with the fact that he has six kids - the man knows how to juggle schedules and squeeze the most out of a day! Not only that, but he also knows how to focus his attention on each customer and make them feel well taken care of. I'm sure his family can attest to that trait.
Since Tim hasn't gotten to experience as many Hug A Plumber week's at Top Tier as our other plumbers, let's make sure we get him caught up on hugs this week!!
Matt has been with Top Tier for just over 5 years, but it feels like a life time.
Matt was born and raised in the Reedsburg area which helps him understand and relate to our customers so well. The minute you meet Matt he makes you feel at ease and by the end of the conversation you feel like old friends.
An experienced plumber, Matt knows how to do the job efficiently and get it right the first time. He'll take the time to explain things to you and make sure you're comfortable with the job.
Matt's hard work and dedication are evident not only in the shop, but also with his beautiful family. We think part of what makes Matt such a great plumber is the support he receives from his family. Everyone at Top Tier likes to work hard and help our customers, but at the end of the day it's our families and how we're able to help your family that matter most and we work hard to always remember that.
We're so glad that Matt is part of the Top Tier family - thank you for always doing such a great job Matt, you're an incredible part of our team!
Kaleb is not only Top Tier's newest Journeyman plumber, but he is also Top Tier's longest employee - he's been with us almost from the very beginning. Kaleb has worked with us through the growing pains that are inevitable with a growing business.
Why is Top Tier so lucky to have Kaleb on our team? For an employer, it's a rare thing to be able to find an employee who works as hard as Kaleb does and always comes in with such a great attitude and treats our customers like they're members of our family. No matter what goes on throughout the day, Kaleb always has a smile on his face even if it's been a 12 hour day out in the hot sun, freezing cold, or up to his knees in sewage.
Thank you Kaleb for being such a wonderful employee and great team player. Our customers think you're great and so do we!!
We can't help but show our love and appreciation for Top Tier's Master Plumber and co-owner Tim Schumann!
Tim began plumbing when he was 19 years old. He was lucky enough to have an outstanding teacher - Kevin Krueger of Krueger Plumbing who he worked for until September of 2010 when Kevin decided to relocate and Tim went into business for himself.
Ever since then, Tim has been working hard to build his business and perfect his trade. He truly enjoys working hard and being able to produce a quality product that a customer can appreciate for years and years.
He also likes being able to give back and be a part of the community that he has grown up in and is now lucky enough to be raising his two girls in. He is truly thankful for the opportunities he's been given and the business he's worked to build.
April 25, 2018 is "Hug a Plumber Day". Top Tier loves their plumbers so much that we've decided to celebrate with an entire week!!
The week of April 23-26 we are celebrating not only our plumbers - but plumbers everywhere. We want to thank them for the long hours, hard work, and well, you know, the literally sh**ty work days they have. Without you we wouldn't have clean water to drink, warm water to shower, and comfortable places to do our "business" in our homes.
Thank you plumbers! A special thanks to the hardest working, most fun plumbers we know - Tim, Kaleb, Matt and Tim - you guys are truly the best.
During the winter the shop slows down a little and we work frantically to get all of our "winter" projects done. This usually always consists of organizing something, and streamlining a process to ensure that Spring, Summer and Fall go smoother the next year.
While Tim has been busy organizing the shop, I've been busy streamlining office operations and sometimes you just need a break from sitting in front of the computer. I tackled a project that has been driving me nuts since moving into our house 2 years ago - our walk-in pantry. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE our pantry. It seriously might be one of my favorite rooms in the house, except for maybe the Master Bathroom of course! The only problem was it never really got organized.
When we moved in I was working two jobs, going to grad school and was pregnant with our first child. That rolled into a newborn in the house and a job transition. We also did the majority of the work in our house ourselves, so projects were getting done when we could fit them in. Organizing the pantry just wasn't top of the list, I was just happy to have shelves to put the food on.
Today was the day. A pantry purge. Goodbye evaporated milk with an expiration date of 5/2008. You made it through two moves with me. It was a good ride, but it was time to part ways.
While I don't know that the pantry organization is perfect yet, it's better than when I started. We're still limited on what we can store on lower shelves due to our toddler, but it's come a long ways and I can now tell that there's no need to buy pizza sauce for at least a couple months.
One of the best parts of being a small, local business is the ability to give back to our community and all the wonderful residents and businesses that we are lucky enough to have as our customers. One of the ways that Top Tier is giving back this year is by sponsoring Reedsburg's first ever triathlon.
We love that this event is promoting healthy activities for kids and adults and are even more thrilled that the proceeds of this event will go towards improving the Reedsburg Parks and purchasing outdoor fitness equipment for parks.
Help support the Reedsburg Community and challenge yourself with a fun race - check out www.reedsburgtriathlon.webs.com for more information.
Megan is co-owner of Top Tier, LLC. Her appreciation and love of a fully functional plumbing system began back in 2008 while on a date with Tim (the other co-owner of Top Tier) when he took her on a drain cleaning call. It was then that she fully realized how truly wonderful it is when your plumbing system works correctly and you can call a reliable professional to take care of your problem instead of having to do it yourself!
