One of the biggest differences between America and Europe - Americans should be grateful each and every day for FREE public restrooms! In Italy there are essentially no free public restrooms...you can expect to pay up to 1.50 euro (depending on exchange rate that's about $1.88). So, if you are thinking of traveling to Europe - keep in mind your mother's advice, whether you have to go or not, you try before you leave the hotel, the museum or the restaurant that you are in because you won't get a chance to later unless you're willing to pay for it!
We encountered some very interesting bathrooms - many of them without toilet seats, one women's bathroom with just a women's urinal in it, and just about every single bathroom with the tank built into the wall - some where we felt like we were playing where's waldo to find where the handle was to flush.
What was very apparent in most of the bathrooms that Americans should take note of - is the fact that water saving fixtures are a big deal. Just about every bathroom had toilets with an option for two different water usage amounts.
While it's nice to visit another place, sometimes traveling makes you thankful for the little things at home - like a nice bathroom, with constant water temperature in your shower and a toilet seat on your toilet!
